What are cantilever brakes? These are brakes with two distinct arms, each of which attach to one side of the fork (in front) or opposite seatstays (in back). They're heavier than the center-pivot brakes common on road bikes, but provide more clearance for fenders and debris, and more power. They're commonly found on touring bikes, and cyclocross racers will happily wax poetic on their favorite canti brakes with little prompting.
